ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Grado’s beaches are why the Habsburgs came and why families keep coming: three kilometres of fine golden sand facing due south — the “Island of the Sun” never has shade on its shore — shelving so gently that the water stays shallow and warm far out. The four zones run from Costa Azzurra at the old town (clearest water, free), through the main GIT beach with its 85-metre seawater pool and its quirkily democratic Habsburg-era tradition (a €2 ticket buys the day until 17:00, after which the coast is free), to Città Giardino and finally Grado Pineta, 3.5 km along the seafront bike path, where the pines come down to the sand and the kitesurfers launch.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Habsburg aristocracy discovered Grado’s healthy climate in the 19th century and built the seafront hotels and the Nazario Sauro breakwater; the GIT main beach’s paid-entry tradition descends directly from imperial-era bathing etiquette. The town has been a Blue Flag resort for decades, and its sand is trucked and groomed as carefully as any in Italy.
