ABOUT THE DESTINATION
Hrvatsko Zagorje is the rolling hill country north of Zagreb, a region of vineyards, thermal-spa towns and a remarkable density of castles — including Trakošćan, the most photographed in Croatia, and Krapina, site of one of the richest Neanderthal finds in Europe. It is the historic heartland of the Croatian nobility and a quiet rural escape from the capital.

HISTORY & CULTURE
The Story Behind the Place
Hrvatsko Zagorje was the heartland of the Croatian nobility under the Habsburgs, who filled the region with castles and manor houses such as Trakošćan and Veliki Tabor. The Krapina fossils, excavated in 1899, revealed dozens of Neanderthal remains and made the region a key site in human prehistory.
