ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Varaždin is one of the prettiest towns in northern Croatia, a baroque city that was briefly the Croatian capital in the 18th century and preserves a dense old town of pastel façades, an old fortress and a central square full of flowers. It is the cultural centre of the Hrvatsko Zagorje region and the host of a well-known baroque music festival.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Varaždin was a free royal town from the 13th century and served briefly as the seat of the Croatian parliament (the Ban’s government) in the 18th century, before a great fire in 1776 moved the administration back to Zagreb. Its baroque old town survives largely intact from that period.
