ABOUT THIS ITINERARY
Two days let Korčula become an island rather than a town. The first day holds the east end’s history, water and wine — the old town, the Badija archipelago, the Lumbarda beaches. The second crosses to the west end for Vela Luka, the prehistoric cavern of Vela Spila, and the choice between the Hum fortress hike and the boat trip to Proizd’s swimming platforms.
OVERVIEW
The route at a glance
Day one stays in the compact east: town, channel and vineyards. Day two commits to the west end, ideally sleeping in or near Vela Luka to put the cave, the hill and the boats within an easy morning. Each evening closes on water — the southern coves the first night, the Vela Luka riva the second.
THE SCHEDULE
Day by day
The old town, the archipelago and the wine road
The old-town circuit early, a kayak or water-taxi crossing to Badija for the monastery and a swim, then the Lumbarda wine road and the evening at Pupnatska Luka.
- 08:00
Korčula Old Town
2 hoursThe full old-town circuit before the day-trip boats land: the grid, the cathedral, the walls, the alleged Marco Polo house.
- 10:30
Badija and the archipelago
3 hoursCross by kayak or water taxi to the monastery islet — the Gothic cloister, the circuit path and a channel-side swim before the afternoon crowds.
- 15:00
Lumbarda: Grk and the sand
3 hoursThe wine road out to Lumbarda — a cellar tasting of Grk, then the sandy afternoon at Bilin Žal or Pržina.
- 19:00
Pupnatska Luka at sunset
2 hoursThe evening swim and konoba dinner at the island’s finest bay, facing the sunset down the open Adriatic.
The west end: Vela Luka, Vela Spila and Proizd
Cross to Vela Luka for the prehistoric cave of Vela Spila, then choose the Hum fortress hike or the Proizd boat trip for the afternoon, closing on the riva.
- 09:00
Vela Spila cave
1.5 hoursThe marked path up from Vela Luka to the great cavern — the sea-facing mouth, the roof skylights, and the prehistoric record that makes the site famous.
- 11:00
The Cultural Centre and the riva
1 hourSee the Vela Spila finds — including the celebrated prehistoric figurines — in the Vela Luka Cultural Centre, then walk the palm-lined riva.
- 13:00
Hum hike or the Proizd boat
3–5 hoursThe west end’s two classic afternoons: the climb to the Habsburg fortress on Hum for the 360-degree views, or the boat to Proizd for the white-rock swimming platforms. Pick by weather — wind sends you up the hill.
- 19:30
Dinner on the Vela Luka riva
2 hoursClose the island on Vela Luka’s seafront — fish, the evening promenade, and the ferries coming and going in the half-moon bay.
