ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Korčula old town is a compact fortified settlement on a small peninsula, laid out on a planned herringbone grid whose streets curve to channel the winds — a piece of medieval town planning that still shapes the town. The walls and towers that once guarded the peninsula survive, and the streets hold the Cathedral of St Mark, the bishop’s palace and the alleged birth house of Marco Polo. It is one of the most complete medieval small towns on the coast, and the reason most visitors come to the island.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Korčula was a Venetian fortified town from the medieval period, and its old town was laid out on the planned grid that still survives, with the main street running the length of the peninsula and the side streets curving to manage the winds. The Cathedral of St Mark was built over the 14th–16th centuries, and the town’s walls and towers date from the Venetian period. The claim that the explorer Marco Polo was born here is locally maintained — the alleged birth house stands in the old town — though the historical evidence is debated.
