ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Vela Luka anchors the west end of the island — a broad half-moon bay, a palm-lined 19th-centuryriva, and the hill of Hum crowned by an abandoned Habsburg fortress. Above the town, among olive groves, opens Vela Spila (“The Great Cave”), a huge limestone cavern with a sea-facing entrance and two skylights in its roof. Its layered floor has produced one of the most important prehistoric records in the Adriatic: Mesolithic hearths, Neolithic pottery, and — most famously — ceramic figurines some 17,000 years old, among the oldest art objects in this part of Europe. The cave, the fortress hill and the bay’s rocky beaches make Vela Luka the island’s second base and its archaeology capital.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Vela Spila was used from the Upper Palaeolithic through the Neolithic — over twenty millennia of intermittent occupation, preserved in deep ash and soil layers. Excavations since the 1970s have uncovered hearths, tools, pottery and the celebrated figurines, and the site remains one of the key prehistoric references for the Adriatic. Vela Luka town itself grew as the export port of Blato’s wine and oil in the 19th century, and its numbered streets and seafront houses date from that era.

Why it matters
Vela Spila makes Korčula one of the deep-time stories of the Adriatic — human presence here reaches back toward the ice age. For a visitor it pairs a genuinely important cave with the easiest-going town on the island.
