ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Korčula archipelago spreads across the channel between the town and the Pelješac peninsula, and Badija is its largest and best-loved islet: forested with pine and holm oak, edged with rocky and pebble beaches, and dominated by a Franciscan monastery founded in the late 14th century with a fine Dalmatian Gothic cloister. A flat path circles the whole islet, beaches face the open channel, and the smaller islets of Vrnik and Planjak — once quarries that supplied Korčula’s stone — lie nearby. Water taxis shuttle from the town waterfront all summer, and sea kayakers use Badija as their standard crossing.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Franciscan monks from Bosnia were granted part of Badija in the late 14th century and built the monastery over the following century, its cloister a textbook example of Dalmatian Gothic. The monks held the island for centuries, though in the 20th century it was repurposed as a sports centre before being returned to the order. The neighbouring islet of Vrnik held the quarries whose stone built Korčula town and much ofVenetian Dalmatia.
