ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Ksamil is why the Albanian Riviera went viral: a cluster of white-sand beaches on a quiet headland south of Sarandë, facing four small green islands you can swim, paddle or pedal-boat to, with the UNESCO ruins of Butrint a ten-minute bus ride inland. It is unapologetically a beach town — sunbeds, tavernas, pedalos and the clearest shallow water on the coast — and in July–August one of the busiest strips in Albania. Come in June or September and the same water is yours at half the price.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Ksamil is the Riviera’s youngest town and its fastest story: a fishing settlement founded in the 20th century on the headland facing the four islands, beside the ancient lagoon city of Butrint. For decades it lived off fish, mussels and the land; the tourist boom of the 2010s–2020s turned its white-sand bays into the most photographed beaches in Albania and the village into a town of hotels, apartments and restaurants. Its Older sister Sarandë administers it, its ancient neighbour Butrint gives it world heritage at the door, and its beaches give it the postcard — four green islands in water the colour of glass, now the symbol of the whole Albanian coast.

Practical Information

Getting There

Ksamil sits 15 km south of Sarandë — frequent local buses (30 min) run all day in season, taxis and rental cars make it in 20. The Butrint bus passes through; Corfu airport’s proximity makes the town a fly-and-beach favourite. In town everything is walkable; the southern coves need a short drive or a coast-path walk.

What to Wear & Bring

Reef shoes for the islands and rocky cove edges, cash for beach rows and tavernas (cards accepted at bigger places), water and shade plan for island picnics. In peak weeks bring patience for parking — or arrive on the bus.

Accessibility & Mobility

The main beach has serviced flat sections with boardwalk access points in season; the promenade is step-free. The islands, coves and Butrint’s trails involve uneven ground — the park’s main route is manageable with assistance.
