The Promenade & Corfu Views
The long seafront boulevard on the horseshoe bay — tavernas, palm walks and Corfu across the strait, close enough to read the island’s hills on clear mornings.

Beaches & Coast
The Riviera’s southern capital — a horseshoe bay facing Corfu, tavernas on the promenade, Lëkurësi castle on the hill and Butrint’s ruins at the door.
Sarandë is where the Riviera becomes a city: a broad horseshoe bay of hotels and tavernas facing Corfu across a two-kilometre strait, the ferry terminal for the island, and the practical base for Butrint, Ksamil and the southern beaches. Its own sights — the Lëkurësi castle on the hill, the ancient synagogue mosaic in the centre, the long promenade — plus the best-connected position on the coast make it the Riviera’s southern capital and its easiest stay.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Sarandë grew from Onchesmos, the ancient port of the Butrint coast — a harbour town with a 5th-century synagogue whose mosaics still lie under the modern centre. Byzantine, Norman and Venetian hands ruled the bay; Ottoman Lëkurësi castle watched the strait from 1537. The modern town — renamed for the Forty Saints monastery of its hinterland — developed through the 20th century as the south’s port and fishing centre, then boomed after the 1990s into the Riviera’s southern capital: hotels up the hillsides, the promenade along the bay, the Corfu ferry at its pier, and the gateway position to Butrint, Ksamil and the far south that makes it the practical heart of the southern coast.

ITINERARIES
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Sarandë is the south’s transport hub: 4–5 hours by road from Tirana, 1 hour from Corfu by ferry, and buses/furgons to Himarë, Gjirokastër and Tirana. In town everything is walkable along the bay; frequent public buses run to Butrint and Ksamil (30 min); taxi boats work the bay and islands in season.
Beach gear for the town bays and the Ksamil day, walking shoes for the castle climb, sun protection — the southern sun is strong. Cash for tavernas and buses; cards work in the bigger hotels. Ferry tickets to Corfu book up in peak weeks.
The promenade and town beaches are flat and step-free with serviced sections; the synagogue site is street-level. Lëkurësi castle involves a climb or drive plus stepped interiors; Butrint’s paths are gravel trails through the park — partly accessible with assistance.
