ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Nin is a small town on a salt lagoon north of Zadar, settled since prehistory and the seat of the early Croatian kings and bishops. HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Nin was the seat of the early Croatian kings and the first Croatian bishopric, founded in the 9th century, and its Church of the Holy Cross from that period is the smallest cathedral in the world. The town declined after medieval conflicts but its salt pans and lagoon kept it alive, and it is now a quiet historic resort near Zadar.
