ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Piazza Grande is the reason the star exists: a perfect hexagonal square at the exact centre, ringed by the fortress’s civil monuments — the Doge’s Cathedral of 1636 (its baroque façade added in the 18th century, its altarpieces by Palma il Giovane’s school), the Palazzo del Provveditore Generale that governed the city and now serves as town hall, the Loggia della Gran Guardia and the Loggia dei Mercanti, and the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà. Around the cathedral stand the busts of the six superintendent-generals of the fortress’s first century — the men the Venetian Senate sent to build and run the utopia.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The square was the parade ground of the fortress — its very name, Piazza d’Armi, remembers it — and the cathedral was built for the garrison and settlers a generation after the foundation, dedicated in 1636. The Provveditore’s palace rose between 1598 and 1611 as the seat of the Venetian military-civil government, and the busts below the loggias commemorate the superintendents who administered the ideal city through its first decades.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The square is the utopia’s living room — every radial street of the star leads here, and the ensemble is Venetian civic architecture at its most measured.
