ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The plan is the monument: a nine-pointed star of walls, moats, ravelins and lunettes laid out by Venetian engineers in 1593 according to the mathematics of cannon range, with a hexagonal central square and nine radial streets — geometry as civic ideology. The three gates, each facing the city whose name it carries (Aquileia, Udine, Cividale), pierce the walls so that the view runs unbroken from the door to Piazza Grande: enter any gate and the whole town opens in a single axial glance. UNESCO inscribed the fortress in 2017 in the transnational serial site of the Venetian defence works of the 16th and 17th centuries.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Venice built Palmanova in 1593 to hold its Friulian frontier against the Ottoman raids and the Habsburgs, founding it by decree as a fortress with no town attached — theoretically populated by volunteers and amnestied criminals, in practice by Venetian garrisons and Friulian settlers. Napoleon added the third, outermost ring of lunettes around 1800 and took the city twice; the Austrians held it through the 19th century; the Great War’s Isonzo front passed nearby. Declared a National Monument in 1960 and UNESCO-listed in 2017, it is today the only foundation city of the Renaissance whose plan has never been altered.

The moats, ravelins and lunettes of the three wall rings.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
This is the Renaissance “ideal city” as actually built — the only one intact — and the star shape reads as clearly today as in the 16th-century treatises.
