ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Rastoke is the village itself — a cluster of wooden and stone houses built directly above the cascades of the Slunjčica, with the river running under and between the buildings and the old watermills still standing in the water. The lanes cross small bridges over the streams, and the whole village is a single waterfall landscape lived in. It is the most complete watermill village in the Croatian karst and the natural stop on the way to or from Plitvice.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Rastoke grew as a milling village using the drop of the Slunjčica river to power its watermills, and the village’s wooden and stone houses, sluices and mills survive from the 18th and 19th centuries. It was a military frontier settlement under the Habsburgs, guarding the road between the interior and the outside world, and was badly damaged in the 1990s war. The village has since been restored, and several mills still grind grain for visitors.
