Walk the Village and Bathe in the Pools
Walk the lanes above the cascades and bathe in the village pools — the Rastoke alternative to no-bathing Plitvice.

Nature & Hiking
A watermill village of cascades and wooden houses, the natural gateway to Plitvice.
Rastoke is a small watermill village built directly into the cascades of the Slunjčica river where it joins the Korana, a cluster of wooden and stone houses above a series of small waterfalls and mills. It sits just north of Plitvice Lakes and is the natural gateway to the park — a living version of the same waterfall landscape on a village scale, where you can bathe in the pools that Plitvice forbids.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Rastoke grew as a milling village using the drop of the Slunjčica river to power its watermills, and the village’s wooden and stone houses, sluices and mills survive from the 18th–19th centuries. It was a military frontier settlement under the Habsburgs and was badly damaged in the 1990s war, since restored. The village is the natural gateway to Plitvice, and many visitors use it as the overnight stop before an early start at the park.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Rastoke is a small-scale version of the Plitvice karst — the Slunjčica builds its cascades by the same travertine process, depositing mineral barriers that step the river down through the village. The water is clean enough to swim in, and the village pools hold fish and the usual karst-river insects. The Korana, which the Slunjčica joins, runs on down toward Plitvice and is one of the clearest rivers in the Lika region. The forest around the village is beech and oak, with the birds and the cool air of the highland karst.
