ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Slunjčica cascades are the water that makes Rastoke what it is — a succession of small waterfalls and travertine pools stepping down through the village to where the Slunjčica meets the Korana. The falls are built by the same travertine process as Plitvice, on a smaller scale, and they run under the houses and through the gardens so that the village is woven into the water. Several of the pools are deep enough to bathe in, which is the great difference from the protected lakes to the south.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The cascades were formed by the travertine deposition of the Slunjčica over thousands of years, building the small barriers that step the river down through the village. The mills of Rastoke were placed to use this drop, and the waterfalls have been the village’s livelihood and its identity since the mills were built. The karst geology is the same as Plitvice, so the cascades are a small-scale version of the great lakes.

Access

The cascades run through the village and are seen from the lanes and bridges; swimming is allowed in the marked pools.

Best Time

Spring for the fullest water; summer for swimming; the spray can soak the paths near the falls.
