ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Smederevo’s river face is its nicest surprise: below the fortress walls runs a Danube promenade of gravel beaches, a marina of fishing boats and river cruisers, and the long quay where the town walks at dusk. The fortress from the water side — walls running straight into the current — is the view Serbia paints on its banknotes; at sunset the whole triangle glows. Swim at the city beach, eat fish on the quay, and watch the wall-up river traffic grind past the last Serbian capital.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The quay was reborn after the 1941 disaster levelled the river quarter; the promenade and marina are the town’s post-war public space, and the beach its summer living room.

The Danube here carries the full river corridor’s traffic: barges to Budapest, cruisers to the Iron Gate.

The city beach opens each June; the quay’s fish restaurants smoke carp all summer.
