ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Bač is the fortress time forgot in the best way. On a low rise above the marshes of the Mostonga, a stronghold has stood since the 10th century — the seat of a Bačka duke, a Hungarian royal fortress, a renegade’s Ottoman holding and an Austro-Hungarian prison in turn. The tall brick keep of 1478, walls with five towers and a surviving gatehouse have been conserved since 2019 with EU funds, the moat walk rebuilt, and the island of the Franciscan monastery of Bose sits in the water beside it. Few visitors come: the fortress stands in the quietest corner of Bačka, hedged by fishponds and herons.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
A duke’s seat by the 10th century, Bač appears in the first Hungarian chronicles as one of the strongholds of the Bačka country; a bishopric was founded here in 1090. The great keep rose in 1478 under Matthias Corvinus, its brick specially fired against the new artillery. Ottoman forces held it from 1526 to 1687; the Habsburgs later used it as a frontier prison before abandoning it to the marshes. Conservation began in 2006 and a full EU-funded restoration was completed in 2019 — the walls conserved, the keep’s floors re-decked for visitors and the surrounding wetland made into a protected bird habitat.
