ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
A walk through Diocletian’s Palace and the Riva is the essential Split experience — a circuit of the Roman palace that is the old town, taking in the Peristyle, the mausoleum-cathedral, the underground cellae and the gates, and ending on the palm-lined harbour promenade. Because the palace is the city, the walk is as much about the living lanes and the cafés as about the Roman stones.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You enter the palace through one of the gates, walk to the Peristyle, visit the cathedral and the cellae, and wander the lanes of the palace interior — Roman walls, medieval houses and shops all mixed. The circuit ends on the Riva for a coffee and the harbour view, and can be extended up Marjan for the panorama.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
The palace is the old town, so the walk is free and always open; the cathedral, the cellae and the temple have entry fees. The lanes are busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon — walk early or in the evening. Allow a half-day at leisure.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
This is the core Split experience — the Roman palace as a living city, and the way to see why Split is a UNESCO site and the capital of Central Dalmatia.
