ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Riva is Split’s living room — a long palm-lined promenade along the harbour, with the wall of Diocletian’s Palace on one side and the sea and the islands on the other. It is where the city walks, drinks coffee and gathers, and the view from the Riva takes in the ferries leaving for Brač, Hvar and Vis. It is the natural start and end of any day in Split, and the place the city feels most like itself.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Riva was laid out as a formal promenade in the 19th century under French and then Habsburg rule, replacing the old harbour works that had stood against the palace wall. It became the social centre of the city, lined with cafés and palms, and it has kept that role through Yugoslavia and independent Croatia. The promenade was rebuilt and repaved in the 2000s, and it remains the city’s defining public space.

Why it matters
The Riva is the everyday Split — the café life and the harbour view that make the city feel like a living place rather than a monument. For a visitor it is the place to start the morning and end the evening.
