ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Viminacium is archaeology in motion: the baths and amphitheatre of the Roman capital open in the fields, the necropolis’ painted tombs (the frescoed burial chambers are among the empire’s finest) stand sheltered, and the loess pit beside the site holds the mammoths of the ancient river — “Vika”, the female mammoth of 2009, is the star. The park’s walking circuit reads the whole city.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Founded in the 1st century around the legion’s camp, Viminacium grew to the provincial capital of Moesia Superior — emperors came (Trajan, Hadrian), the mint struck, the amphitheatre played. The Huns burned it in 441; the medieval fields kept it. Serbian excavations (since 1882, a gold rush since 2000s) have uncovered a fraction — the dig continues every summer.
