ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Viminacium is the Roman empire’s Serbian capital: the legionary fortress and provincial capital of Moesia (from the 1st century), whose baths, amphitheatre, aqueduct and necropolis rise from the Požarevac fields in an ongoing excavation — the most active Roman dig in the Balkans. Around the city lies the great necropolis (the painted tombs, the frescoed chambers), and beneath the loess hills the mammoth skeletons (the famous “Vika” mammoth) of the Pliocene river. It is the gateway site of the Danube’s Roman frontier — an easy half-day from Belgrade on the way east.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Viminacium (from the 1st century) was the camp of Legio VII Claudia and the capital of the province Moesia (later Moesia Superior) — a city of perhaps 40,000 with baths, an amphitheatre, temples and the Danube trade. Emperors visited (Trajan, Hadrian; the tetrarchs); the necropolis around it is among the empire’s largest. The Huns destroyed it in 441; the river trade moved to the fortresses downstream and the fields kept the ruins. Excavation (from 1880s, intensively since 2000s) has uncovered the baths, amphitheatre and the painted tombs — and the Pliocene mammoths in the loess (the “Vika” mammoth of 2009) made the site’s second fame.
