ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The White Bridge is Vranje’s emblem: the small 19th-century stone bridge over the Vranjska river, rebuilt by the tale’s forbidding father — the love story every local recites. Around it the Biser Vranja keeps the Ottoman quarter: the merchant houses, the Haji-mosque, the hammam’s remains and the lanes of the sandžak era.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The bridge (rebuilt in the 19th century by the merchant’s father, the story goes, to separate the lovers — the bridge that now symbolises the town) anchors the old quarter. The Ottoman era (1455–1878) built the Biser Vranja — the houses, mosque and hammam of the sandžak centre; the liberation and the south road added the modern town around it.
