ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The ride from Aquileia to Grado follows the ancient road across the lagoon margin — dead flat, almost entirely on dedicated cycle path, through vineyards and along the canals of the Natissa to the lagoon of Grado, whose town rises from the water like a miniature Venice (founded, like Venice, by refugees from Aquileia itself). It is one of the best half-day rides in northern Italy: Roman ruins at one end, a swim off the lagoon beaches at the other.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You set off from the basilica square through the village lanes, join the signed cycle path south across the plain, and ride 10 gently flat kilometres as the fields give way to reeds and the first lagoon water. In Grado you lock the bikes, swim off the beaches or the historic thermal baths, eat a seafood lunch on the old-town canals, and ride back in the evening light with the Alps behind you.
THE EXPERIENCE IN DETAIL
What it’s really like
HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
Dead-flat dedicated cycle path — ideal for families and casual riders.
Grado at the finish: lagoon beaches, the historic thermal baths, and the old-town canals.
The landscape itself — the same lagoon margin across which the refugees of 452 fled to found both Grado and Venice.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
About 40 minutes each way at an easy pace; bike hire in Aquileia village or from hotels in Grado. Spring and autumn are ideal; in high summer ride early — the plain is treeless.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
It ties the whole story together in one ride — the imperial city, the flight across the lagoon, and the towns that the refugees built — and it is simply one of the most pleasant cycles in the region.
