ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Aquileia village is tiny — three streets of cafés and wine bars around the basilica — and the evening passeggiata here has the intimacy of a place where everyone actually lives: aperitivo at a table under the bell tower, the ruins floodlit, the swallows over the Natissa. Around the village stretches the wine country of the Friulian plain — Collio and Isonyo DOC country to the north, and the osmizze of the Carso — farmhouse taverns that open a few days a month to pour their own wine with smoked ham, cheese and omelettes.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You eat and drink like a Friulian: an aperitivo on Piazza Capitolo watching the basilica change colour, dinner in one of the village’s family trattorie (river fish, prosciutto, frico), and — on an osmiza open day — a farmhouse table in the karst hills above, pouring Ribolla Gialla or Refosco from the barrel.

What it’s really like
HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
Aperitivo under the floodlit basilica tower — the whole town does it.
Friulian cooking: frico, prosciutto, river fish and the whites of Collio.
The osmizze of the nearby Carso — farmhouse taverns open by calendar, a uniquely Friulian institution.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Aquileia’s restaurants are few and close early by city standards — eat at 19:30 or earlier. Osmizze open days are published monthly online; plan around them.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
After the ruins, this is how Aquileia actually lives — a working wine-and-food country whose unhurried evenings are the reward for coming here at all.
