ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The plain between the modern town of Bar and the hilltop ruins of Stari Bar is one of the oldest olive-growing areas in the Mediterranean, a sea of silver-green trees that has been cultivated for centuries and still produces oil today. The walk through the groves is the gentle counterpoint to a visit to the ruined old town above — flat, shaded and quiet, with the trees stretching to the foot of Mount Rumija. Its most famous resident is the Old Olive (Stara Maslina), a tree estimated at more than 2,000 years old and one of the oldest olive trees in the world, still standing and still green.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
The groves are open and free to walk along the lanes between the modern town and the foot of Stari Bar. The Old Olive is enclosed in a small protected area and can be seen close up. The walk is flat and shaded, suitable for all fitness levels. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times; in summer the groves are hot and dry. Small producers sell olive oil and olive products along the roads toward Stari Bar.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The olive groves are the reason Bar existed where it did — the old town on the hill above was built to watch over this productive plain — and they are still worked today. For a visitor the walk is the easiest way to see the agricultural landscape behind the coast, and the Old Olive is a genuine natural monument, a living tree older than most of the walls above it.
