ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
“Ada” is Belgrade’s seaside, 4 kilometres from the centre: a Sava river island dammed in 1967 into a lake with a 7-kilometre pebble beach, ringed by 7 km more of bike and running paths through poplar woods. The water is clean and swimmable from June to September, with lifeguards, beach bars, waterski and SUP rental, and the rowing course that trained Olympic champions. Inland on the peninsula, the woods hide football pitches, tennis courts, a golf course, and the quiet northern tip where herons fish in the backwaters. It is where the city goes on a 35-degree July Saturday — pack a towel and join it.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Ada’s name dates to the Ottoman era — “Ciganlija” recalls the Romani communities who summered on the island with their horse herds. For centuries it was a flood-plain island; in 1967 the Sava was dammed at both ends, turning the northern arm into the lake and joining the island to the mainland — an engineering work of its decade, executed by youth labour brigades. The beach opened in 1968 and the rowing course has trained Olympic medallists since the 1970s.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The 7 km Sava lake beach — the “Belgrade sea”, swimmable June–September.
The bike loop around the peninsula — 7.8 km, flat, rented by the hour everywhere.
The northern wild tip — herons, cormorants and the quiet backwaters of the old Sava arm.
GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
The lake is 4.2 km long and the beach strip 7 km — the largest artificial lake-beach complex in this part of Europe.
On a hot July weekend the Ada hosts up to 300,000 visitors — a temporary city bigger than most Serbian towns.
The rowing course hosted the 1979 world championships; Serbian Olympic crews still train here.
“Ada Safari”, the wild northern tip, keeps an unmanicured forest and the city’s only beaver colony.
