ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The climb to Stjepan-grad is the upper layer of a Blagaj visit, and the one that demands the most effort. The route climbs from the village to the medieval fortress on the hilltop, the fortified seat associated with the Kosača lords and the capital of Herzegovina under Stjepan Vukčić Kosača in the 15th century. The ascent is short but steep, exposed and uneven, with loose stone and little shade, and the ruins at the top — walls, towers and the outlines of the inner buildings — are open-air and unmaintained in places. The reward is the panorama over the Buna valley, the village, the Neretva plain and the surrounding karst, and the sight of the tekija and the spring far below. Take it slowly, wear sturdy shoes, and keep it for the cooler hours.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
A short but steep, exposed and uneven climb on loose stone with little shade. The ruins at the top are open-air and unmaintained in places, so watch your footing among the walls. Carry water in warm weather, and keep the climb to the morning or the late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. The view from the summit is the reward and the way to read the whole site from above.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The climb is the way to read Blagaj as a layered site — the medieval fortress above and the Ottoman tekija below — and the panorama from the ruins is the one sight that takes in the whole ensemble. For a visitor it is the demanding counterpart to the gentle riverbank visit.
