ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Stjepan-grad is the medieval fortress on the hilltop above Blagaj, the fortified seat associated with the Kosača lords who ruled Herzegovina in the late medieval period. Under Stjepan Vukčić Kosača in the 15th century it served as the capital of Herzegovina, and the ruins that survive — walls, towers and the outlines of the inner buildings — are the remains of that seat. The fortress is reached by a short but steep, exposed and uneven climb from the village below, and the view from the top over the Buna valley, the Neretva plain and the surrounding karst is the reward of the ascent. The pairing of the medieval fortress above and the Ottoman tekija below gives Blagaj its layered character.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Stjepan-grad was the medieval fortified seat of the Kosača lords, the family that ruled much of Herzegovina in the late medieval period. Under Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, who took the title Herzog (duke) and gave the region its name, the fortress served as the capital of Herzegovina in the 15th century, before the region came under Ottoman rule. The fortress was built and extended over the medieval period on the hilltop above the Buna, commanding the valley and the route below, and it declined after the Ottoman conquest shifted power to the new towns of the plain. The surviving walls, towers and building outlines are the remains of that medieval seat.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The walls and towers — the surviving medieval fortifications on the hilltop.
The inner buildings — the outlines of the structures within the fortress.
The view over the Buna valley — the panorama from the summit, taking in the river, the village and the Neretva plain.
The pairing with the tekija — the medieval fortress above and the Ottoman tekija below, read together from the top.
WHY IT MATTERS

Stjepan-grad is the medieval layer of Blagaj and the seat that gave Herzegovina its name under the Kosača dukes. For a visitor the climb to the ruins is the way to read the site from above and to pair the medieval fortress with the Ottoman tekija below.
