ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Karađoz-beg Bridge is a multi-arched stone bridge over the Buna on the lower reach of the river at Blagaj, a fine example of Ottoman bridge-building in Herzegovina. It was built before its first documented mention, which occurs in the 1570 endowment deed (vakufnama) of Karađoz-beg, the powerful Ottoman benefactor whose foundations dot the Mostar region; the precise year of its construction is not recorded, and it should not be given a fabricated date. The bridge carries the old road across the Buna below the tekija and the spring, and it is the architectural companion to the tekija at the other end of the ensemble — the Ottoman civic structure that pairs with the Ottoman sacral one. It is best read from the banks and crossed on foot for the view up the Buna toward the cliff.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Karađoz-beg Bridge was built in the Ottoman period, before its first documented mention in the 1570 endowment deed of Karađoz-beg, the benefactor whose foundations included the Karađoz-beg Mosque in Mostar and a range of public works across the region. The bridge is a multi-arched stone structure in the Ottoman bridge-building tradition, carrying the road across the Buna below the spring. The precise year of its construction is not established by the documentary record, and no fabricated date should be assigned to it. It forms part of the Ottoman layer of Blagaj, alongside the tekija.

WHY IT MATTERS

For a visitor it is the lower anchor of the visit and a fine piece of Ottoman engineering in its own right.
