ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The gorge is Serbia’s monastery valley: within a few kilometres of the Zapadna Morava, ten monastic communities (Sretenje, Blagoveštenje, Vavedenje, Jovanje, Nikola and the rest) live below the Ovčar and Kablar cliffs — the density that earned the “Serbian Athos” name. The road threads them; the walks connect them; the nuns and monks keep them living.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Founded through the 14th–17th centuries (the earliest legends carry the Nemanjić era; most standing buildings are 17th–19th-century rebuilds), the gorge’s monasteries kept learning and liturgy through the Ottoman centuries — the desert-father tradition that made the gorge Serbia’s spiritual archive. Sretenje (rebuilt 1818) is the nuns’ centre; Blagoveštenje (1602) keeps the oldest continuous community.
