ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

The Plateau Rosà cableway is the reason Cervinia exists as a summer destination: from the village it rises in three stages — Plan Maison (2,553 m), Cime Bianche Laghi (2,813 m), Plateau Rosà/Testa Grigia (3,480–3,882 m) — onto the Theodul glacier where snow never leaves. At the top: the “Una Montagna di Lavoro” museum, the highest in Europe, telling the improbable story of building a cableway across the ice in the 1930s–60s; the turquoise glacial tarns of the Cime Bianche; the ice grotto, carved each winter in the glacier; and the trail — with a guide — to the Klein Matterhorn station and Zermatt beyond the border.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

You ride up through the stages with the pyramid in the window, walk the short glacier-view circuit from the top station, visit the museum and (with a guide, most of the year) the ice grotto. Non-skiers get the full high-mountain experience: thin air, silence, and the matter of the Matterhorn at eye level. Dress for winter — it is below zero up there even in August.
