ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
At Lisine the Vrelo — the Resava’s spring branch, said to be the coldest river in Serbia — leaps in a 25-metre curtain over a travertine barrier it has built for itself out of its own lime. The waterfall is the centrepiece of the Lisine excursion site: an old mill, a restaurant above the pool, paths up the gorge and the constant sound of the fall. It is the easiest beautiful half-day in the valley — 15 minutes from Despotovac, reachable by any car, with a swimming hole below the curtain in summer.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The travertine barrier grows a few millimetres each year — the waterfall builds its own dam as the lime-rich, cold water degasifies over moss. The mill at the spring ground Homolje’s grain for two centuries; the excursion site was formalised in the 1970s around the mill and restaurant, and the gorge paths link Lisine with the higher Resava gorge trails toward the cave. Veliki buk has become one of the most photographed falls in central Serbia, yet the pool below still belongs to the village children in August.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
The fall is 25 metres high and drops over a travertine curtain the river itself builds from dissolved limestone.
The Vrelo is claimed as the coldest river in Serbia — a constant near-spring temperature year-round.
An 18th-century watermill still stands at the spring, now a museum of Homolje milling.
The site lies inside the Kučaj mountains’ protected area — lynx and Ural owl survive in the gorge above.
