ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Gamzigrad is one of Europe’s most extraordinary Roman sites: Felix Romuliana, the fortified palace-emperor Galerius built (298–311) for his mother Romula and his own retirement — ramparts, temples, villas and the two imperial tumuli on the hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and among the best-preserved tetrarchy monuments anywhere. Zaječar, the Timok valley’s town 20 minutes north, keeps the region’s living culture — the brass orchestras’ tradition (the trumpets of the east), the wine of the vineyards and the river towns’ easy rhythm.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Galerius (ruled 305–311) built Felix Romuliana as his retirement palace and his mother Romula’s memorial — the fortified compound (ramparts 20 towers) held temples to his divine parents, luxury villas and the mosaics; the hills above hold the two tumuli where his and Romula’s bodies were burned (the emperor deified). The site was identified only in the 1980s — the inscriptions settled the name; UNESCO inscribed it in 2007. Zaječar grew as the Timok valley’s centre — the Hayduk tradition, the brass bands (the “biseri” of the region) and the vineyards of the hills.
