ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Dubrovnik Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin (Velika Gospa), stands in the heart of the Old City on the site of earlier churches that stood here across the medieval period. The present building is a Baroque cathedral raised after the destructive 1667 earthquake on the foundations of its predecessors, and it remains the principal church of the city and a centre of the religious life of Dubrovnik. Inside are artworks from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and the treasury holds a collection of historic gold and silver reliquaries, including objects connected with the veneration of Saint Blaise, the patron saint of the city.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

A cathedral has stood on this site since the early medieval period, with earlier Romanesque and later churches preceding the present building. The great 1667 earthquake that levelled much of Dubrovnik destroyed the earlier cathedral, and the present Baroque cathedral was built on the same site in the decades that followed, funded in part by the legacy of the Ragusan patron Stjepan Gradić. The cathedral became the principal church of the city and the seat of its religious life within the Republic of Ragusa, and the treasury accumulated reliquaries and sacred objects across the centuries, many connected with the veneration of Saint Blaise, whose feast on 3 February is the city’s great annual celebration. The relics preserved in the treasury are understood within religious tradition as the relics of the saints; their identification is a matter of faith and tradition rather than scientifically verified fact.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The cathedral is the religious heart of the Old City — the principal church of Dubrovnik and the seat of its centuries of worship, rebuilt after the 1667 earthquake on the foundations of its predecessors. For a visitor it is the quiet counterpart to the civic palaces of the Stradun, and the treasury is the clearest material link to the city’s devotion to Saint Blaise and to the long religious tradition of the Republic of Ragusa.
