ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Franciscan Monastery of the Friars Minor stands just inside the Pile Gate, at the western end of the Stradun, and is one of the oldest and most important religious complexes in Dubrovnik. Its Romanesque-Gothic cloister, the church, the museum collection and the pharmacy together tell the story of the friars’ role in the spiritual, scholarly and practical life of the Republic of Ragusa. The pharmacy, established in 1317, is commonly described as one of Europe’s oldest surviving pharmacy traditions, and the complex remains an active religious house today.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Franciscan friars were present in Dubrovnik from the medieval period, and the monastery complex near the Pile Gate was built and enriched across the late medieval and Renaissance centuries. The cloister, built in the Romanesque-Gothic style, is the finest surviving part of the medieval complex. The pharmacy was established within the monastery in 1317 and is commonly described as one of Europe’s oldest surviving pharmacy traditions, supplying medicines to the city across the centuries; it should not be claimed as definitively Europe’s single oldest continuously operating pharmacy, as several European pharmacies contest that distinction. The 1667 earthquake that devastated Dubrovnik damaged the monastery and its church, which were subsequently rebuilt and restored, leaving the Baroque elements visible alongside the older cloister. The complex remains an active religious house of the Franciscan friars.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Franciscan Monastery is the spiritual and scholarly counterweight to the civic palaces of the Stradun — the place where the friars tended the city’s souls and bodies, and where the pharmacy tradition has run since 1317. For a visitor it is the quiet interior of the old town, away from the wall walk, and the clearest link to the everyday religious and medical life of the Republic of Ragusa.
