ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The Konavle valley is Dubrovnik’s rural hinterland: a flat-floored green corridor between the coast and the Sniježnica mountain ridge, laced with country lanes, stone villages, mill streams and cypress lines. Cycling it is the region’s classic outdoor half-day — an easy, mostly flat ride through a working agricultural landscape that could hardly be more different from the walled city an hour away. The standard route strings together the villages of the valley floor, the old watermills on the Ljuta river and a long lunch stop at a konoba in the fields, with the ridge rising on one side and the sea glimpsed on the other.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
Most rides start from Čilipi or Gruda, reached by car or a local excursion transfer from Dubrovnik in under half an hour. The route follows quiet country roads and gravel lanes across the valley floor, visiting the Ljuta river with its restored watermills at Konavoski dvori, the stone villages and churches of the plain, and viewpoints under the Sniježnica slopes. The riding is easy — the valley is flat, the traffic light — and the loop can be shortened or extended freely. A long konoba lunch of peka or grilled river trout is the traditional centrepiece of the day.

HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The Ljuta river mills at Konavoski dvori, the historic watermill complex of the valley.
Stone villages, dry-stone walls and cypress lines of the Konavosko polje.
An unhurried konoba lunch in the fields — peka, river trout, local wine.
The contrast with Dubrovnik: a working rural landscape half an hour from the walls.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
An easy half-day ride of 15–30 kilometres depending on the loop chosen, on quiet paved roads and hard gravel lanes. Bikes can be rented in Dubrovnik or Čilipi; some operators run supported rides with a van and a guide, while independent riders can follow the valley lanes freely. There is little shade on the valley floor apart from the village trees — carry water and sun protection. Add the Sniježnica slopes only if you want real climbing; the valley floor itself stays easy.
