ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Fort Lovrijenac (often called St Lawrence Fortress) stands on a high rock just outside the western city walls, above the small West Harbour known as Pile Bay. Unlike the forts within the walls, it was built as an independent stronghold to command the approaches to Dubrovnik from the sea and the land, and it was deliberately positioned to be defended against the city itself should the need arise. Together with the western harbour and the Bokar bastion, it formed the real defensive landscape that protected the western flank of the Republic of Ragusa. In the 21st century the fortress and the harbour became known to a wider audience as one of the Dubrovnik locations used to represent King’s Landing in the television series Game of Thrones — a modern screen-tourism layer that sits on top of, but does not replace, the site’s long military history.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Lovrijenac was built by the Republic of Ragusa across the medieval and early modern periods as the key western defence of the city, a freestanding fortress on a sheer rock above the sea. Its design reflects the republic’s defensive doctrine: the walls facing the sea are thick, while the walls facing the city are thinner, so that a garrison that turned against Dubrovnik could be breached from within. Over the entrance an inscription is traditionally translated as “Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro” — “Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world” — a statement of the Ragusan cult of liberty. The fortress and the West Harbour remained part of the city’s defensive system until the end of the republic in 1808, and the site was later used for cultural events. In the 2010s the fortress and the western harbour were used among the Dubrovnik filming locations for King’s Landing in Game of Thrones; this screen use is a recent chapter in the site’s history and is not endorsed by or affiliated with the programme’s producers.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Lovrijenac and the West Harbour are the real western gate of Dubrovnik — the independent fortress that guarded the approaches to the republic, and the place where the city’s defensive genius is most legible. The Game of Thrones connection has brought many visitors, but the fortress matters first as a monument of Ragusan liberty and military skill; the screen-tourism layer is best understood as a recent addition to that older story.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The fortress stands just outside the Pile Gate and the western walls, reached by steep stone approaches and stairs above the harbour; confirm current opening arrangements and any event closures before visiting.
Visiting
The site is exposed stone with steep steps and little shade — wear shoes with grip and bring water in summer heat. Access may be restricted during performances or events held in the fortress courtyard.
Context
The fortress and the West Harbour are part of Dubrovnik’s genuine defensive landscape; their later use as a Game of Thrones filming location is a modern screen-tourism layer, not an indication that fictional events took place here historically, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the programme’s producers.
