ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Ardenica’s walled monastery stands on the highest ground of the Myzeqe plain, 25 minutes from Apollonia — an 18th-century complex (on older foundations, tradition says a chapel where Skanderbeg married in 1451) with a frescoed church, a courtyard of cypresses and a refectory restaurant whose simple, honest food has fed pilgrims and travellers for two centuries. The view runs from the Adriatic to the Vjosa — the plain’s best single panorama.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
A monastery stood here by the 14th century; tradition holds the chapel of St John hosted Skanderbeg’s wedding to Donika Andronika in 1451. The present complex was rebuilt in the 18th century — church frescoes of 1744, monks’ cells, wine cellars and the famous refectory. Suppressed under Communism (1967), it was restored as a monument after 1990 and its restaurant reopened — today it is the plain’s favourite Sunday-table outing.
