Independence Monument & the Flag Square
The monumental bronze ensemble at the waterfront where Ismail Qemali raised the Albanian flag on 28 November 1912, declaring the country’s independence from the Ottoman Empire.

Beaches & Coast
Where the Adriatic meets the Ionian — Albania’s historic bay city and the gateway to the Riviera, the Karaburun peninsula and the Llogara pass.
Vlorë sits at the head of a wide bay where the Adriatic hands over to the Ionian, backed by the pine slopes of the Ceraunian mountains. Albania’s independence was declared here in 1912, and the city pairs that national history with a lively seafront (the Lungomare), the island fortress of Sazan and the wild Karaburun peninsula just offshore, and the Llogara pass — the dramatic mountain gate to the Riviera coast — at its back door. It is both a working port city and the natural first stop on any journey down the Albanian Riviera.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Vlorë is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities of Albania, founded as the Greek colony of Aulon and later a Roman port on the coastal branch of the via Egnatia. Its bay made it a prize for every Mediterranean power: Norman attacks in the eleventh century, Venetian and then Ottoman rule from the fifteenth century, and the short-lived Serbian and Italian occupations around the First World War. Its defining moment came on 28 November 1912, when the Assembly of Vlorë declared Albanian independence and Ismail Qemali raised the flag — making the city the first capital of the modern state. Under the communist regime the bay became a fortified naval zone — Sazan a secret submarine base, the Karaburun coast closed — and only after the 1990s did Vlorë reorient from fortress port to Riviera gateway, its seafront rebuilt and its bay opened to the boat trips, beaches and the road over Llogara that define it today.
TOP THINGS TO DO
TOP ATTRACTIONS

Seafront restaurants along the Lungomare — grilled fish and seafood by the water, busiest in summer evenings.
Traditional kitchens in the centre away from the promenade — lakror, spit-roast meats and everyday Albanian cooking at local prices.
HOTELS & STAYS
Hotels on the Lungomare promenade — beach, cafés and the evening walk from the door; the quieter southern end is the better swim base.
The historic centre around Flag Square — the grand-hotel atmosphere and walking distance to the monuments and the port.
ITINERARIES
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Vlorë is about two hours by road from Tirana and its airport (the new Vlorë airport is under development nearby). Frequent furgon minibuses and buses connect the city with Tirana, Durrës and Fier; in season, ferries and catamarans link Vlorë across the bay. A car is the practical choice for the Llogara pass and the southern Riviera; boat trips to Sazan and Karaburun leave from the port and Lungomare in summer.
Beach gear for the bay and the boat trips, sturdy shoes for the Llogara trails, and sun protection everywhere — the bay is exposed. Cash (lek) for beach bars, furgons and smaller tavernas.
The Lungomare promenade is flat and fully walkable; the Flag Square monuments are at street level. Boat tours and the Zvërnec footbridge involve steps or boat boarding; the Llogara trails and Karaburun are not accessible routes.
