ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Takovo is the uprising’s ground: the hillside where Miloš rallied the knezes on Palm Sunday 1815, marked by the memorial church and monument. The town museum’s Takovo room keeps the documents and the story — how the second rising, unlike the first, was planned and won, ending in Serbia’s autonomy by 1830.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
After the First Uprising’s collapse (1813) and the Ottoman reprisals, Miloš Obrenović chose the moment: Palm Sunday 1815 at Takovo — the standard raised, the knezes rallied, the Ottomans beaten at Ljubić and Požarevac. The diplomacy (with Russia’s pressure) turned victory into autonomy (1830) — the state that Kragujevac’s capital and Belgrade’s dynasty grew from.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
The rising began on Palm Sunday (11 April) 1815 — Miloš chose the feast deliberately.
The “Takovo bush” under which Miloš rallied the knezes is the town’s symbol — replanted and memorialized.
The uprising won Serbia autonomy by 1830 without a single foreign army — diplomacy after the battles.
The town (founded 1853) is named for Miloš’s brother Milan — “Gornji” to tell it from Obrenovac.
