ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Gazimestan stands in the fields west of Priština: the stone tower (1989) marks the site of the battle of Kosovo (28 June 1389) — prince Lazar’s army against sultan Murad’s, the encounter that became the Serbian people’s founding epic. The monument’s crypt keeps the memorial inscription; the field around it holds the Mujè (the turbe) and the memory landscapes of both traditions.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The battle of Kosovo (Vidovdan 1389) — both rulers died; the event entered the Serbian epic cycle within a generation and shaped the people’s memory for six centuries. The monument was raised for the 600th anniversary (1989, the famous Gazimestan speech); the site remains a place of annual Vidovdan gathering.
