ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Gračanica is king Milutin’s gift to Serbia’s art: the 1321 church with its five domes and the fresco programme that stands at the very top of Byzantine painting — a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the village of the same name, 10 minutes from Priština. The Kosovo field around it holds the region’s deepest memory: Gazimestan, the memorial of the 1389 battle of Kosovo, stands where prince Lazar’s army met the Ottomans. Priština itself — the region’s capital — is the practical base: the new born (the Newborn monument), the imperial mosque and the cafés of a young capital.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

King Milutin built Gračanica in 1321 on the ruins of the older basilica (the Virgin’s church of the 12th century), and the painters covered its walls c. 1321–1324 with the frescoes that rank beside the finest of the Byzantine world — the Nemanjići lineage, the festivals and the Passion cycles. The Kosovo field’s battle (St Vitus Day, 28 June 1389) — prince Lazar against sultan Murad — became the founding memory of the Serbian epic; the Gazimestan monument (1989, the 600th anniversary) marks the field. Priština grew as the Ottoman-era market town and the modern capital; the Newborn monument (2008) marks its newest chapter.
