ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Novo Brdo was the silver capital of medieval Serbia: the walled city on the volcanic hill (the fortress of king Milutin’s era, the Saxon miners’ quarter below) fed the Nemanjići treasury and Europe’s mints — its silver (with the “Novo Brdo silver” mark) was the Balkans’ benchmark. Today the ruins on the hill are one of the region’s most evocative sites: the walls, the church foundations and the mine shafts’ mouths read the whole medieval economy in one walk. Below, the Gadimlje (Marble) cave adds the underground marble galleries to the day.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The hill city grew with the Saxons’ mining settlement (13th century); king Milutin and his successors walled it, and through the 14th–15th centuries Novo Brdo was among Europe’s richest mining towns — the Despot Đurađ Branković’s silver fed the Serbian state and the Ottoman tribute. The Ottomans took it in 1455 (the city’s fall is chronicled); the mines declined and the hill kept the ruins — the fortress walls, the church of St Nicholas’s foundations and the miners’ quarter. Excavations (recent decades) opened the site; the Gadimlje cave below (discovered 1966) added the marble galleries.
