ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Peć pairs Serbia’s spiritual centre with its wildest gorge: the Patriarchate of Peć — the church cluster where the Serbian archbishops and patriarchs were enthroned from the 13th century, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — sits in the gorge’s mouth where the Bistrica (Pećka Bistrica) leaves the Rugova mountains. The gorge itself is the day’s second act: 25 km of vertical cliffs, the Lumbardh river and the road into the Prokletije (“the Accursed Mountains”). The town between them keeps the Ottoman bazaar and the region’s most dramatic setting.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The Patriarchate grew around St Sava’s era (the 13th century) as the seat of the Serbian archbishops; the church cluster (three churches joined by a common narthex, built 13th–14th centuries) was where the Serbian patriarchs were crowned and buried — the patriarchs’ graves line the narthex. The Ottoman era ended the patriarchate’s independence (1766, its abolition), but the monastery survived as the symbol; the UNESCO listing (2006, “Medieval Monuments in Kosovo”) protects the complex. The Rugova gorge above the town was carved by the Pećka Bistrica through the Prokletije’s limestone — the road through it (built Austro-Hungarian era) is the region’s engineering story.
