ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Grado has been a health resort since the Habsburg court made it their seaside sanatorium, and the Marine Thermal Baths still practise the treatment that built that reputation: thalassotherapy — seawater pools, lagoon mud packs, inhalations and hydrotherapy — prescribed for respiratory, skin and rheumatic complaints and enjoyed by everyone else as the most civilised rainy-day activity on this coast. The waters here carry the mineral signature of the lagoon, and the tradition is a century and a half old.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Austrian doctors began sending patients to Grado in the 1850s; the marine thermal institution formalised the practice and the town’s Habsburg villas, promenade and bathing etiquette all grew around it. The baths remain in operation year-round — one of the few spa traditions on the Adriatic with an unbroken imperial lineage.
