ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Kampana Tower is the tower at the seaward angle of Kotor’s city walls, standing where the waterfront meets the mouth of the Škurda river at the edge of the old town. It is not a separate fortress but the lower anchor of the same defensive system that climbs the cliff above to San Giovanni — the point where the walls come down to the water to guard the town’s harbour and its Sea Gate. From here the ramparts run inland along the Škurda and then turn upward to climb the mountain, so the tower sits at the junction of the sea, the river and the town. For a visitor it is the place to read the defensive scheme from the water level: the way the walls were built to close the town against attack from both the bay and the heights, and the way the waterfront itself was fortified rather than left open.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Kotor’s fortifications were built up over centuries, principally under Venetian rule from the 14th to the 17th centuries, and the waterfront walls and Kampana Tower belong to that system. The tower guarded the seaward approach to the town and the harbour beside the Sea Gate, the point at which goods and people arrived by water; the Škurda river, which runs along the landward side of the walls, was channelled into a defensive ditch. Together with the citadel near the harbour and the ramparts climbing to San Giovanni, the tower formed the lower ring of a defensive scheme that enclosed the town on three sides — sea, river and mountain — and left only the cliff above as the line of greatest threat, which is why the walls climb so far up it. The system was maintained under Austrian and Austro-Hungarian rule and damaged in the 1979 earthquake; it forms part of the UNESCO-listed Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

Kampana Tower itself — the seaward tower at the angle of the walls, where the waterfront meets the Škurda, the lower anchor of the defensive system that climbs to San Giovanni.

02

The waterfront stretch of wall — the ramparts running along the harbour and the bay, built to close the town against attack from the sea and to guard the Sea Gate.

03

The Škurda river and its defensive channel — the river that forms the landward side of the walls, turned into a ditch below the ramparts that run from the tower toward the cliff.

04

The view along the walls toward the cliff — from the waterfront the full line of the ramparts can be read rising from the sea to the fortress above, the single defensive structure that defines Kotor.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Kampana Tower matters because it is the place to understand Kotor’s fortifications from the water level rather than only from the famous climb above. The walls are usually experienced as the stairway to San Giovanni, but they are a single closed system that begins down here at the bay, runs along the river and then climbs the mountain — and the tower is the corner where the sea and land defences meet. For a visitor it completes the picture begun at the fortress: the same walls, seen from the bottom up.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The tower and waterfront walls can be viewed from the harbour and the waterfront promenade at any time. Interior access to the tower and any walkable sections of rampart depend on current restoration, barriers and opening arrangements; check locally and respect all barriers and private premises.
Orientation
The tower stands at the seaward edge of the old town near the Sea Gate and the harbour, where the Škurda meets the bay; the waterfront promenade gives the clearest view of it.
Pairing
Combine with the Sea Gate and the old town, the Maritime Museum on Flour Square, and — for the upper end of the same system — the San Giovanni fortress wall climb.
Safety
The waterfront has open edges, and the stone of the walls and promenade is worn and slippery when wet. Respect barriers around restoration areas and do not enter restricted or private sections of the ramparts.
Context
The tower and waterfront walls are part of the UNESCO-listed Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor, the lower element of the town’s complete defensive system.
