ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Šumarice is one of Europe’s great memorial landscapes: a hillside park (352 ha) over the valley where on a single October morning German troops executed ~2,800 citizens of Kragujevac — among them a whole class of the high school, taken from their desks. The monuments (1960s–80s) are Yugoslav memorial art at its strongest: the “Interrupted Flight” (Miodrag Živković) rises toward the sky in broken concrete wings for the boys; the “Crucified One” and the “Walls of Death” keep the rest. The museum of 21 October keeps the lists, the photographs and the shoes.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The massacre of 21 October 1941 was a reprisal ordered after partisan and German losses in Gornji Milanovac — killed at a ratio of 100 hostages for one German soldier. The victims were taken from the town’s workplaces and schools; the order’s arithmetic is preserved in the museum. The park was opened in 1953 and monumented through the 1970s; Desanka Maksimović’s poem “Krvava bajka” (A Bloody Fairy Tale) fixed the boys’ story in Serbian memory. The class photograph — thirty boys and their teacher — hangs at the museum’s heart.

GOOD TO KNOW

Facts & Curiosities

01

The reprisal ratio was 100 executed for every German soldier killed — Kragujevac was the largest single reprisal in occupied Serbia.

02

“Krvava bajka” by Desanka Maksimović is one of the most translated Serbian poems — the schoolboys of Kragujevac are world poetry.

03

The “Interrupted Flight” monument (1963, Miodrag Živković) breaks upward — wings of a bird stopped mid-air, for the boys who never landed.

04

The museum keeps the original October lists: occupations, ages, streets — an entire town in a ledger.
