ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Kragujevac’s centre keeps the state’s childhood: the Amidža Konak (1818, the capital’s only surviving court building), the Gymnasium (1833), the theatre from 1835 — Serbia’s oldest stage — and the streets where the first newspaper, pharmacy and Lyceum stood. The Lepenica river walk ties it together, and the Zastava story is told in the town’s industrial museum.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
From 1818 to 1841 Kragujevac was the capital of the Principality: the People’s Court, the printed word, the stage and the Lyceum all began here before the capital moved to Belgrade. The cannon foundry of 1853 — Serbia’s first industrial plant — grew into Zastava, whose arms and cars carried the 20th century; its assembly halls were destroyed in the NATO bombing of 1999.
