ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Godinje is a stone village set on a terrace above the western shore of Lake Skadar, in the Crmnica hills that give the local wine region its name. It is one of the best-preserved old villages of the Lake Skadar shore — a cluster of stone houses, narrow lanes, walled gardens and agricultural terraces that still read as a working rural settlement rather than a museum. The Crmnica hills around it have been planted to vines for centuries, and the village is the natural centre of a wine landscape that produces the red Crmničko vino for which the area is known. Godinje is a living village, not a curated attraction: private houses, cellars and vineyards are not freely accessible, and wine tastings, household meals and guided access require direct arrangement with the household or a local guide.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Godinje and the Crmnica hills have been settled and farmed since the medieval period, when the Crnojević dynasty held the Lake Skadar shore and the inland hills were given over to vines, olives and pastoral agriculture. The village grew as a stone farming settlement on the terrace above the lake, its houses, lanes and terraces built from the local karst stone and arranged around shared cisterns and gardens. Crmnica wine — a dark red wine from the local vineyards — has been the region’s signature produce for centuries, shipped down to the lake and traded across Montenegro. The village survived the Ottoman and modern periods largely intact and remains a living settlement, though many houses are now only seasonally occupied. Wine production continues in private cellars and small holdings, and access to any of them is by arrangement, not as of right.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Godinje is the place where the human landscape of Lake Skadar survives most fully — a living stone village above the lake, set in the Crmnica wine hills that have shaped the region’s agriculture for centuries. For a visitor it is the cultural counterweight to the boat tour and the birdlife: a village, a wine landscape and a terrace view rather than reed beds and water. But it is a living village, not an open-air museum, and its value depends on respectful, arranged access rather than free roaming through private property.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
Reached by a narrow, winding road from the Virpazar area; parking is limited in the village. Private houses, cellars and vineyards are not freely accessible — wine tastings, household meals and guided access require direct arrangement.
When
Year-round for the village exterior; wine tastings and arranged visits depend on the household or guide and the season.
Etiquette
Treat the village as a living settlement — do not enter private houses, cellars or vineyards without arrangement, and respect residents’ privacy.
Driving
Crmnica wine is strong; if you taste, arrange a designated driver or stay overnight, and never drink and drive. Drivers must remain alcohol-free.
Context
It is a living historic village in the Crmnica wine region above Lake Skadar, not a curated attraction.
