ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Lake Skadar is one of Europe’s most important bird habitats, and birdwatching is one of the best reasons to come. Hundreds of species have been recorded on the lake and its reed beds, including the rare Dalmatian pelican, the pygmy cormorant, herons, egrets, grebes and a long list of waterfowl and migrants. The best way to see them is from a boat, moving quietly through the reed beds and the quieter bays, or from the shore hides and viewpoints around Virpazar and the northern shore. Spring and early summer are the richest seasons, when the breeding birds are present and the migrants are passing through. Sightings are never guaranteed — pelicans and other wildlife vary with season, weather, water level and the luck of the day.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Birdwatching is possible year-round, but April to June is the richest period. A boat tour from Virpazar is the best way to reach the quieter bays and reed beds where the birds concentrate; some operators specialise in birding trips. Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them. The lake is a national park, so keep a respectful distance from nesting birds and follow the guide’s instructions. Early morning is the best time of day for bird activity. No sighting — pelicans included — is guaranteed; wildlife varies with season, weather, water level and the day.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Lake Skadar’s birdlife is the reason the Montenegrin shore was declared a national park, and it is one of the great wetland birding destinations in southern Europe. For a visitor it is the experience that sets Skadar apart from the mountain parks — a day of pelicans, cormorants and reed beds rather than peaks and canyons — and a genuine wildlife encounter rather than only a scenic boat trip.
